Beyond Funchal

The Madeira Wine Route

The five Funchal lodges age and bottle the wine — but the grapes come from terraced vineyards across the island. To see the actual production landscape, you need to drive (or be driven) to the Câmara de Lobos coast or the cooler north-coast vineyards around São Vicente. This is the trip wine-curious visitors should make on Day 2 or 3.

Two production zones, two characters

Madeira's vineyards split between two coasts with very different microclimates:

  • South coast (Câmara de Lobos area): steep terraces facing full sun. Hot, dry conditions favour Tinta Negra (which becomes 85% of all production) plus Bual. The terraced landscape itself is the iconic Madeira wine scenery — vines on stepped stone walls climbing toward cliffs.
  • North coast (São Vicente / Santana): cooler microclimate, more rain, higher altitude (~400m). Sercial and Verdelho thrive here — both grapes need acid, and acid comes from cool nights and slow ripening.

The drive between them is one of the most spectacular in Madeira — over the Paul da Serra plateau or through the Encumeada pass. It takes 60-90 min by car each way; if you're doing both zones in one day, expect a full 7-9 hour outing.

Wine route stops

São Vicente Vineyards

São Vicente, north coast · 400m altitude

Grape focus: Sercial (high acidity), Verdelho

North-coast cooler microclimate; contrast to south-coast plantings; scenic drive component.

Câmara de Lobos Terraces

Câmara de Lobos, south coast

Character: Steep terraces, full sun exposure

Grape focus: Tinta Negra (85% of production), Bual

Iconic Madeira terraced landscape; accessible from Funchal by short drive or bus; Henriques & Henriques + Barbeito located here.

Visitable Quintas

Most Madeira vineyards are not open to the public — they're working operations. The accessible exception is Quinta do Barbusano on the north coast.

Two suggested days

South-coast day (Câmara de Lobos)

  1. Morning: drive 20-30 min from Funchal to Câmara de Lobos.
  2. Stop 1: Henriques & Henriques — vineyard + cellar visit, around €30, 90 min. Book in advance.
  3. Lunch: Câmara de Lobos fishing village (try the local lapas / scabbardfish).
  4. Stop 2: Barbeito — single-cask tasting, around €80 if available; book 2+ weeks ahead.
  5. Afternoon walk: Cabo Girão skywalk (Europe's highest sea cliff, 580m). 15 min from Câmara de Lobos.
  6. Evening: Funchal sunset.

North-coast day (São Vicente / Santana)

  1. Early start — drive 50-60 min from Funchal over Encumeada pass to São Vicente.
  2. Stop 1: Quinta do Barbusano — vineyard tour + tasting, ~€30, 90 min. Reserve.
  3. Lunch: São Vicente or Seixal (black-sand beach village).
  4. Afternoon: Santana A-frame houses (UNESCO Biosphere) and Ribeiro Frio trout pools.
  5. Drive back south via Pico do Arieiro for sunset (1,800m altitude — bring a jacket).

No car?

The wine route effectively requires a car. Public buses run to Câmara de Lobos but not on a wine-tour-friendly schedule, and São Vicente buses are infrequent. Two alternatives:

  1. Hire a private driver for the day (~€150–250 for 8 hours; ask at your hotel concierge or via WhatsApp Madeira Tours below).
  2. Book a guided wine-tour day via GetYourGuide / Viator — the full-day Wine Tours Madeira excursion (€200–250) covers transport + curated stops.

See our no-car wine guide for the Funchal-only walkable alternative.
